Eight Great Yarmouth Cycling Club members took part in the East Coast Triathlon at the weekend.

It was a super sprint distance event, consisting of a 250m swim, 18km ride and a 3km run.

On Saturday, Wayne Hallam, Tom Moore and Catherine Lee competed. Weather conditions were reasonable, but although there was a strong wind to contend with all three riders looked strong on the bike.

It was Hallam’s first triathlon, and an excellent effort took him under the hour, with a completion time of 58.16.

Moore showed he is on excellent form, completing the event in 54.29.

Lee, a previous winner of the event, returned to challenge for the title. A strong effort saw her complete the course in 51.43, earning her first place in the ladies’ event and making it the third time that she has won the East Coast Triathlon, an excellent achievement.

Sunday saw more favourable conditions - although it was considerably colder, the strength of the wind was a good deal less.

Chris Wrycraft, also taking part in his first triathlon, set himself a goal of going under one hour 10 minutes. He surpassed expectations, finishing in a time of 1:01.39.

Taking part for a second year running were Jamie Mordecai, Eirrin Thompson and Ian Freel and all made improvements on last year’s times, showing that a hard winter’s training had paid off.

Mordecai knocked an amazing four minutes 30 off his previous time, bringing it down to 55.25.

Freel shaved two minutes 38 seconds off his previous personal best, taking him under the hour to complete in 57.43.

Thompson brought his finishing time down to 53.17, taking off one minute 12 seconds of his previous best effort.

Another first timer, Stephen Swallow, showed strong early season form, completing in 53.41, an excellent achievement.

All Great Yarmouth Cycling Club competitors commented on what a well run event it had been, with a great mixture of experienced tri-athletes and newcomers.

It was fantastic to see so many different age groups participate, and the event was marshalled brilliantly. It was also pleasing to see so much support at the pool and during the cycling and running sections.
