Olympic gold medallist Bradley Wiggins and superstar sprinter Mark Cavendish will race through Great Yarmouth as the Tour of Britain cycle event comes to town next month.

And organisers have now unveiled the race route, and the best times for spectators to turn out on Sunday, September 9 to cheer on those taking part.

Some of the world’s best professional cyclists will contest day one of the Tour of Britain, with the Suffolk and Norfolk shared stage starting in Ipswich and ending at the Norfolk Showground.

Along the route there will inevitably be an impact on traffic, with police motorcylists ensuring that the professional riders have safe passage by enforcing rolling road closures by temporarily blocking junctions.

Residents wanting to avoid the race are also therefore urged to make themselves aware of the route and timings.

The popular race returns to Yarmouth after the borough council made a financial contribution to ensure that the race returned to the borough this year, bringing a further economic boost to the area on a weekend that also sees Yarmouth play host to the OutThere Festival. Among those taking part will be Olympic Gold medallist and Tour de France winner, Bradley Wiggins. He will be joined by world-class sprinter Mark Cavendish – the Manx Missile. The borough will also see a celebration of cycling taking place on Saturday, September 8 – as a mass participation public bike ride, the Tour Ride, takes the same route as the professional cyclists will follow just 24 hours later.

Members of the public choosing to take part can either cycle the full route from Ipswich to the Norfolk Showground, or half the route – from Great Yarmouth to the Norfolk Showground.

The Yarmouth base for the Tour Ride will be at Wellesley Recreation Ground (Albermarle road entrance), where registration will take place on site from 8.30am to 9.30am and riders departing between 10am to 10.45am.

Riders completing the full leg from Suffolk are expected to arrive in Great Yarmouth from 11am until 1pm. The public event does not see any road closures.
