The fourth and final Todd & Turner Mugs competition of the winter at Gorleston Golf Club produced some fireworks with the scoring in the fourball better ball format.

Ray Pope and Dean Chilvers probably expected their round of 44 points would be in the mix, but it was only good enough for third place from the 38 pairs playing.

Likewise, with Graham Tovey and Peter Tindsley, who have already tasted success this season with different partners. Their score of 45 points took second place on this occasion as no-one was able to stop the partnership of Jason Dexter and Stuart Pearce as their immense score of 47 points swept everyone aside.

Their prizes were of more than £60 each in vouchers and sweep winnings, plus the honour of holding the mugs until the next competition which will be in the autumn.

The Ladies of Gorleston entertained their counterparts from Costessey in the first of their 2017 friendly matches last week but despite some excellent golf from both teams on a cloudless, warm day, it was the visitors who left with a 3–1 victory.

The following day saw the first of the two annual matches as the Ladies take on the Seniors for the One-eyed Birdie.

The Greensome format, using Hambro scoring, worked tremendously well and the Ladies’ team were left with a slender three-hole advantage ahead of the second leg in October.

The 14th Midweek Stableford of the winter saw 71 players taking part and it was Jack Flaxman who blew everyone away in the First Division with an excellent score of 40 points.

Damien Foxhall’s score of 42 points was the best individual round of the day and he won Division Two by a comfortable margin of three points.

Jack’s score catapulted him up the leaderboard to second place in the season-long aggregate competition for the Foolhardy Trophy.

Following a bye if the first round of this year’s Daily Mail Foursomes, the club’s men’s pair of Glen Jermy and Simon Hellary must travel to near-neighbours Great Yarmouth & Caister for their second round.

Penny Platten and Rosemary Woodhouse, still riding high after their thrashing of Caldecott Hall in the opening round, also face an away match next time, against the club’s other neighbours, Rookery Park Golf Club.
