On Saturday, Sophie Mckinna of GYDAC competed in the England U17 Outdoor Championships at the Bedford International Stadium. There were 10 girls in the competition that included seven of the top 10 female shot putters in the UK.

Her performance was fantastic with five of her six throws over 12 metres, the best being 12.56m which won her the silver medal.

This was a new personal best throw for Sophie and meant that she had beaten the county record that she set in July (12.44, the previous record had stood for 27 years).

This was the fourth medal that Sophie had won at a major competition this season. The fact that Sophie is a first year in her age group and her fellow competitors are two years older makes her achievements even more remarkable.

If any local business/individuals are interested in sponsoring Sophie they can contact Andrew Mckinna (her father) on 07733 137206.
