On Sunday three members of Great Yarmouth and Waveney Fencing Club took part in the Norfolk County Fencing Union Senior Individual Championships in Taverham.

Robert Johnson and Simon Blackwell competed in the men's foil and both fenced solidly in their respective poule rounds, after which Simon was seeded eighth and Robert 16th.

Simon battled through his first elimination match against Alex Walchester, creating some fine attacks to win 15-4. He then learned that he would have to face the winner of Robert's direct elimination match.

Robert was unfortunate to draw one of last year's finalists, Lloyd Ingleson, for his direct elimination match. He fenced valiantly, spurred on by the thought of a clash with Simon, but eventually conceded defeat by six hits to 15.

Simon then fenced Lloyd, attacking and parrying with dexterity, seeking retribution for Robert's defeat. However, despite this inspiration, Simon's quest for a medal ended here by three hits to 15.

Club president Amanda Scarff represented the club in the women's sabre and was seeded second after the poule. She faced Laura Healy in the final fight for the gold medal. It was a very close contest between the two for the entire match and it came down to the final point, where Laura produced a superb parry riposte to win 15-14.
