Paulius Macriulevicius of Kingfisher ABC beat Nathan Dale of Norwich Lads Club over a three minutes, three-round bout in the Norfolk senior ABA championship at the Astley open boxing show Newmarket last Friday.

In front of a large, appreciative crowd both boxers looked to stop each other early on. Dale landed right and left uppercuts with success as Macriulevicius moved in behind his strong lead hand and looked to score with his right.

But throughout the first round Dale picked Macriulevicius off as he tried to close in with well-timed shots then moved out of danger

and waited for the next Macriulevicius attack.

Behind going into the second round, Macriulevicius kept to his game plan of closing the ring down and forcing Dale to constantly move out of danger. For the first half of the round Dale was again scoring well but was visibly tiring. Macriulevicius increased his workrate, pushing Dale back with some good combination work, using straight left and rights and then following up with solid left and right hooks to body and head.

With a minute to go Macriulevicius caught his opponent with a solid right that rocked Dale, who did well to stay on his feet and recover quickly enough to cover up and move out

of range.

Having reduced Dale's lead in the latter half of the second, Macriulevicius still had a lot of work to do to make up the points deficit from the first round.

From the first bell of the third Macriulevicius showed a grim determination to get to grips with his opponent. Always moving forward he never stopped throwing punches, scoring with punch after punch. He quickly had Dale in trouble and forced the Norwich boxer to use up valuable energy attempting to escape the onslaught.

Dale never really achieved this and his only respite came with a minute to go when he lost his gumshield and the referee stopped the bout so that it could be cleaned and replaced.

After this Macriulevicius seemed to score well and finished the round with a five-punch combination that had the crowd on their feet.

Macriulevicius had a unanimous points win and a well-deserved place in the next round tonight.
