GREAT Yarmouth and District Ladies' Bowls League Finals Day at Hickling Bowls Club on Saturday was thoroughly enjoyed by a large number of supporters.

Before the start of the afternoon, a minute's silence was held in memory of Jennifer Hudson who had recently died. Jennifer was a member of Great Plumstead Bowls Club and was well known in the world of bowls.

On a warm day but with the sky looking very dark at times, some excellent bowling provided an exciting afternoon's entertainment.

The competitions started with the singles match, for the Ella Trett Challenge Cup, between Ada Sumpter from Acle and Lilian Barber from Great Plumstead.

Lilian took an early lead and continued to bowl well. Although Ada put in some good woods, she was unable to make up the deficit with Lilian eventually winning the game 22-9 to retain the trophy for the fourth time.

At the same time, the pairs competition was taking place.

Sally White and Sheila Crysell from the host club, Hickling, took on Joy Pearson and Fay Moll from Freethorpe.

The Hickling duo got off to a good start and by the halfway stage were five shots in front.

The Freethorpe ladies didn't give up and pulled back to within one shot, but to no avail as the Hickling ladies continued to pile on the pressure and went on to win 17-11.

The final of the triples competition, won by Joy Pearson, Fay Moll and Janet Church, was not contested.

The afternoon finished with an appetising array of refreshments provided by the ladies of the host club, Hickling, followed by the presentation of trophies by the league chairman, Amy Barker.

A raffle was also held and this raised 240 for Cancer Research, the charity chosen by the Hickling ladies.
