AN impressive cast of anglers will be lining up for September's first major event on the rivers Bure and Thurne on Sunday, writes Roy Webster.This is the prestigious teams of four championships where nearly 25 crack east angling outfits will be picking their wits and water lore not only against the wiley bream and roach but also each other in the search for those vital bonus fish that can spell the difference between a team triumph and a disappointing place among the also rans.

This is the prestigious teams of four championships where nearly 25 crack east angling outfits will be picking their wits and water lore not only against the wiley bream and roach but also each other in the search for those vital bonus fish that can spell the difference between a team triumph and a disappointing place among the also rans.

Town team Browning/Pownhalls will be bidding strongly to add this title to their Summer League trophies. However the Sportsman's, Jolly Boys and Stalham angling clubs are also strongly represented. Hoping to beat off the challenge from of the star teams from Norwich and Suffolk.

Martham angling club have declined to compete this year because they have a very important competition of their own. This will cover the bank of the River Thurne below Martham boatyard which has been given a facelift by the Environment.

Last Saturday's Yarmouth League match on the river Yare produce hefty bream, the winner Paul Hudson with 50lbs of Slabs to 5lb a piece.

Dennis Goodwin (Browning/Pownhalls) won the railway lake open with 58lb 9oz while Yarmouth's top match women Marion Mancini won at Mill farm with 56lb 4oz.

Sportsman's (Melton ponds) K Hodgins 35lb 12oz, M Bunn 28lb 9oz, R Silverwood 20lb 8oz and the same people on the river Thurne L Hodges 9lb 11oz and L Arnold 8lb 11oz, M Colman 6lb 13oz. Stalham railway lake D Agass 52lb 14oz, L Reave 28lb 4oz, R Austrin 16lb 2oz Martham River Bure P Beck 12lb 6oz, P Sparks and G Madisson 8lb 12 oz.

On the big carp waters Mike Hicks of Yarmouth heaved out the fish of the week - a hefty mirror scaling 58lb from the Lyng Kingfisher syndicate lake, while at Hall farm Burgh castle dozens of carp to double figures were reported.

Beach anglers fishing from Hopton reported catching numbers of sizable whiting as well as odd codling to over 3lb. Sport with codling is expected to pick up.
