CYCLING: Following the previous week’s successes, Great Yarmouth Cycling Club again recorded an impressive set of results in regional time trials and criterions.

Saturday afternoon saw the second of the Woodbridge Crits take place with some great results being recorded by GYCC riders. In the junior U12, race rising star, Zak Coleman won to add yet another victory to his tally.

Zak has had a great season so far and overcome his fear from the last time he raced on this circuit when he suffered from a crash.

Clive Bond rode the adult novices Go-Race event and featured well throughout but was swamped in the bunch sprint and came home 15th.

Returning 1980s club road racing star Ian Sandall had a fine race in the regional 3/4s and was involved in the thick of the action from the outset to come home in fifth place overall.

The next day saw the Eastern District Cycling Association championship take place just outside Attleborough on the A11. The 10-mile time trial was ridden by the region’s top competitors and featured a strong core of Great Yarmouth riders (see picture on back page).

Star of the show was again Neil Turner who not only rode to record another personal best, but also equalled the club record for a 10-mile TT with 21:26. This placed him eighth overall in a field of well over 100 riders.

Also returning to form was Trevor Hockold who rode with great strength to record a personal best of 22:27. Personal bests were also recorded by Paul Lewis (23:36), Jules Claxton (24:13), Roger Farrow (24:36) and Clive Julian (25:13) as well Chris Roberts, who recorded 23:36 on Wednesday during a regional veterans’ TT competition.

The number of personal bests and top-10 places recorded by GYCC riders this week has once again set a benchmark for club riders. It is clear to see that the winter’s training and the club’s Sufferfest nights have had a great impact on many of the riders’ performances.

Next week will see the Somerleyton 10 TT series continue on Thursday and the club’s road racing fraternity head to the Lotus testing track in Hethel on Wednesday to race against some of the region’s top racers.
