Oliver Mayo, from Brundall, has represented England in swimming and badminton at under 16 level and in the last few years he has been playing semi-professional rugby.

This year the London fireman had the honour of representing the UK in the World Police and Fire Fighter Games – an Olympic-style games held every two years specifically for emergency responders from around the world.

This year in New York he entered an event called The Toughest Competitor Alive!

This consisted of a 5k cross country run, shot put, 100m sprint, 100m swim, 6m rope climb using only hands, bench press, pull-ups, obstacle course all to be completed one after the other, in a single day.

Oliver came fourth and was third until a slip in the obstacle course, making him the top-placed UK athlete in his category.

Without the support of Virgin Money a local company, he would not have been able to participate at all.

They have supported Oliver in his trip to New York and helped provide valuable training equipment that made a great difference.

Oliver has lived in Brundall for most of his life. After many years of trying he eventually got his dream job in the London Fire Brigade. He has worked for the LFB since 2006. In his time he has displayed great confidence and excelled in stressful situations, making himself a fire fighter role model.

He was even selected to appear in the UK Fire Fighters Calendar, much to his embarrassment

He has raised money for charities including prostate cancer, Firefighters Charity and Raise The Roof Kenya.
