Winterton suffered their second successive defeat and dropped two places to fourth in Norfolk Alliance Division Four, as they were beaten at home by at home an impressive Narborough side.

On a soft wicket, Winterton elected to bowl first and were soon on top when Ben Utting removed the visitors’ top three all for ducks. Nathan King (24) and Paul Harwood (43) took the attack to the Winterton bowlers with an aggressive partnership but the former was run out thanks to sharp fielding from Danny Snowling.

Harwood remained aggressive and was supported well by the patient Peter Green who made 30 before Mark Holsworth removed Harwood, followed by two further wickets to give him 3-35.

Utting came back into the Winterton attack to take two further wickets to give him his second five wicket haul of the season with 5-38, but a useful 27 from Mark Hammond saw Narborough to 153 all out in the 39th over giving Winterton 52 overs to chase down their target.

After the early loss of Fred Playford, Winterton got the score to 35 before losing three quick wickets leaving them in trouble on 37-4 after 21 overs as the Narborough bowlers gave nothing away.

Winterton showed some signs of recovery but after getting starts their batsmen fell at regular intervals and they were eventually were all out for 117 in the 49th over as they looked to gain a draw from the game.

Opener Josh Austin top scored with 24 and Thomas Grass was Narborough’s chief wicket-taker with 4-18.

Winterton face a tough trip to league leaders Bungay tomorrow.

Winterton and Rocklands made their debuts in the NACO Cup as they met in the quarter-finals on Sunday.

Winterton won the toss and inserted the visitors into bat and although they removed Jack Noonan early on, Simon Mann (82) and Will Defoe (29) scored freely to give Rocklands a good start.

At one end Tom Whichelow (1-28) and Kevin Percival (3-27) managed to stem the run flow but at the other end the Rocklands batsman found greater success.

Greg Mann with 46 also found runs easy to come by but at 176-3 Winterton fought back through Martin Witheridge (3-13) and 2-25 from Charlie Lockhart who bowled with good pace saw Rocklands dismissed for 198.

Wintertons batsmen got off to a flyer thanks to Bryn Clarke (46) and Fred Playford (32) but both were removed in quick succession.

Wickets continued to fall but runs also kept coming with the game still looking comfortably Winterton’s. However some tight bowling and a number of wickets including Geoff Roper for 33 seemed to have turned the game Rocklands way as they needed to take the final wicket with 23 runs still needed and five overs remaining.

In a bizarre final twist to the game the pressure appeared to get the better of the visitors young bowlers as they succumbed to the legside wide rule and the contrived to bowl 14 wides in the following four overs which saw Winterton home in unlikely fashion with 10 balls to spare.
