The Great Yarmouth-based team of four sponsored by the Regent's Road tackle and bait retailers, pulled off a brilliant result on the Rivers Bure and Thurne on Sunday when they shared top spot with maximum section points with Anglers World B team, writes Roy Webster.

Led by team skipper Tony Anderson, who was top individual on the day, Pownalls' league position was assured by their 33 section point total that left them with 38 league points, three ahead of their nearest challengers Anglers World A on 35 and six better than morning leaders DAD Black, who slumped on the day to now stand in third spot with 32.

Pownalls all rounder Anderson, who is equally at home on both lake and river venues, pulled plum peg No 33 on the River Bure opposite the South Walsham pump landmark. There he fished the standard feeder rig baited with worm and red maggot to end his five hour stint with 22lb 8oz of skimmer bream. And with Mark Haverson, Brian Gooch and Adie Hindry all pulling their weight with better than average section performances, they carried the Pownalls banner triumphantly as the team to beat in the coming rounds.

Kevin Paynter the Yarmouth Sportsmans outfit made second spot with 20lb 8oz from the centre of the cold harbour stretch of the River Thurne and other notable local performances came from Sportsmans Lee Arnold who won his section with 13lb 15oz and StalhamMick Brown who also scored a maximum with 11lbs 4oz.

The Great Yarmouth individual Saturday League on the River Yare produced stunning catches of bream, the best of the season so far.

Andy Moss (DAD) was the winner with 60lb 2oz then Simon Newman (SAD) 48lb 1oz and Kevin Paynter (Yarmouth) 47lb 10oz. The match average was around 25lbs per man and nearly 1,000lbs of fish were weighed in.

On the carp lakes Hall Farm Burgh Castle produced 15 specimens to 22lbs for Adam Bessey of Corton while Belton's Paul Pitcher reeled in 74 smaller carp from the new lake for an estimated aggregate of 370lbs.

Along the beaches sport has been slow with mainly flat fish, the odd school bass and a few smooth hound reported.

Offshore anglers fishing from charter boats have struck it rich with splendid cod catches providing ample reward for their investment.

Mackerel fishing along the north Norfolk coast has not benefited from northerly winds which are forecast to turn south west to bring them within casting range in the next few days.
