Futsal fever arrived in the Norfolk and Suffolk Youth League as teams from Caister Roma, Ormesby Tigers, Martham, Acle United and the Wasps and Hornets of Beccles Town competed in 30 mini Futsal matches.

The attraction of indoors in the warm and dry added to the Futsal experience with the event fully booked, and with Futsal for under 8s, 9s and 11s also fully booked the NSYFL will see the start of Futsal Leagues from October onwards.

The standard of play was very high and of the 30 matches more than 20 ended as draws.

In the league two afternoon matches saw teams from Gorleston Rangers at under 16 and under 7 on adjoining pitches.

Phoenix U16s hosted a top of the table clash with the Aces of Kirkley and Pakefield and the U7 Eagles were enjoying an all-Gorleston Rangers affair as they took on Ospreys.

Rangers Phoenix team inflicted a rare defeat on the Aces in a 4-1 win to open up a three-point lead at the top of the division.

FA rules again prevent the publishing of the under 7 result; however, what can be reported is that it was both a fast and very competitive match.

Two other Division One under 16 matches saw the Wasps of Beccles Town stay second after their 4-0 away win at Long Stratton and Belton followed up last week’s point with three on Sunday with a 8-0 away win at Bohemians.

Breydon United climbed to third position in under 16 Division Two with a 2-0 win over Scole, while league leaders Waveney Cougars shared not only eight goals but the points in the 4-4 home draw with the much-improved Falcons of Gorleston Rangers.

Again the champions may well come from one of those four teams but expect many changes as all these teams are well capable of beating each other.

With the alarming drop-out of under 16 footballers, the NSYFL, with the support of the county officers, are offering under 17 football next season, with a view to offering under 19 development football from season 2016/17.

Norfolk County FA are hosting an evening at Lynn Grove High School on Wednesday, January 28 to address the problem.

Great Yarmouth Town opened up a three-point lead at the top of under 15 Division One with a 4-0 home win over the Hawks of Gorleston Rangers. KPFC Alley cats moved into fourth spot with a 5-1 win over the Dragons also of KPFC, and the Gunners, also of KPFC stay third despite being held to a 0-0 home draw by Halesworth Town.

Last seasons champions Gorleston FC stay fifth despite a fine 8-0 home win over Heigham Park Rangers.

Semi-finals for many age groups start on Sunday and will continue through January and February. All matches will kick off at 2pm as per league rules and no other time will be allowed regardless of the age group. Referees will be appointed to all semi-finals by the league.
