Yarmouth shot put star Sophie Mckinna underlined her credentials for inclusion in the GB team for the World Junior Championships in Barcelona next month.

Sophie, of GYDAC, was in record-breaking gold medal form at the weekend’s Aviva U20 Championships and World Junior Trials in Bedford.

She won gold with a new personal best of 16.16 metres and beat the championship best performance that had stood since 2007. It was the first time that a junior UK female thrower had thrown over 16 metres in the shot since 1984, 10 years before Sophie was born. It was also the best-ever throw in the UK by a 17 year old and the second best throw of all time in the U20 age group.

The fantastic performance means that Sophie is in contention to represent Great Britain at the World Junior Championships in Barcelona next month. Sophie is competing at the Aviva Olympic Trials this weekend in Birmingham.
