GORLESTON Golf Club's scratch handicapper Alex Holmes has twice gone close to course records.

The tale of his double course record-equalling scores began when playing in the club's midweek competition. Alex was five under par standing on the 15th tee, leaving him four holes in which to make a birdie and clinch the club's course record.

After pars on 15, 16 and 17 Alex opted for the safety-first approach and played the par-five 18th with two two irons and a wedge, leaving him 18 feet for his birdie. Sadly it was not to be, but that takes nothing away from his excellent round. His score of 66 placed him runner-up in division one with a new exact handicap of plus 0.3.

The double followed 10-days later whilst competing at Rookery Park GC in the Fishing Smack (Jubilee Cup) 36-hole medal tournament.

Alex finished runner-up with a second round score of a four under par 68, equalling the course record set by James Wright, Rushmere GC in 1998 and furthermore attaining the goal that all golfers strive for, but few achieve - a plus handicap.
