THE Ladies had a magnificent victory away at Woodbridge in the quarter-finals of the Stearn Trophy and face Purdis Heath on the neutral course of Thorpeness in September.

With the home side holding what appeared to be comfortable leads in two of the three matches at the halfway stage and level in the other, matters looked grim for the ladies. But a stirring fight-back in the afternoon saw Gorleston emerge victors by two matches to one.

Young Chris Reynolds did himself and Gorleston proud with his victory in the Fishing Smack Trophy at Rookery Park at the weekend. He pulled himself together after a disastrous four putt at his ninth hole in the afternoon round to win the competition. Had it not been for this he would have also won the Jubilee Cup for the best scratch score.

Twelve club members participated at Rookery Park where Ray Thomson recording a hole in one at the 11th.

Peter Ogden was well down the field in the Club Champions Trophy event at Welwyn Garden City, whilst Alex Holmes could not recover from a disastrous seven over par first round, failing to make the cut in the World Snooker Association Championship at the Players Club in Bristol.

Gerry Eagling hosted his Captain’s Day, the forerunner of which was a Texas Scramble on Saturday in which he led his own team to victory, comprising himself, former captains Jack Flaxman and Paul Platten and secretary-manager David James.

A capacity entry of 84 participated in a Greensome Stableford competition with victory going to the father and son team of Paul and Kyle Brooks with 43 points.

In the Mixed Foursomes victory went to Tanya McGregor and Donald Blair with 39 points.

The most important winner over the weekend was the Captain’s Charity which this year is supporting the Children’s Ward at James Paget Hospital and over the course of the weekend the sum of �668 was added to this year’s pot.

This week the club hosted the Suffolk Junior Championship.

THE inaugural Tim Starbuck Summer Classic, the brainchild of past captain Tim Starbuck, was ontested by 23 teams of four taking part in a Texas Scramble format with prizes on every hole and winning team prizes going down to 10th place.

In addition to the usual nearest the pin and longest drive holes there were two nearest the rabbit holes and two nearest the bottle holes.

Nick Champion (9), Neil Gear (9), Jamie Green (6) and Paul Brooking (18) won with an incredible 54.7.

On Sunday, 64 competitors took up the challenge of securing the Blackheath Meadl (Scratch) or the Hughes Silver Iron (Handicap) in one of the club’s premier competitions.

Taking the Blackheath Medal for the second time in three years was Thaine Hacon (1) with a magnificent Gross 71. The medal was first presented in 1893.

Ray Howes scored a wonderful gross 76 off his 12 handicap to return a nett 64 and take possession of the Silver Iron.

Sue Allen (Great Yarmouth & Caister Golf Club) won the first handicap prize in the Senior Ladies’ Championship at Barnham Broom Valley Course.

The course, which is a par 74 with water featuring on more than half of the holes, proved to be quite a challenge with the competition scratch score moving to 75.
