Gorleston BC beaten in semi-finals of county competition

The showpiece finals of the Hansells Bowls Cup — the last piece of domestic silverware in the Men’s Section of the Norfolk Bowls Association — proved a step too far for Gorleston BC as they were knocked out in the semis.
“We have still had a fantastic day,” said captain Titch Leighton, who was proud of the way his team played. “It is the first time we have reached the finals and it was a treat to compete on Wymondham Bowls Club’s lovely green. Being here caps a tremendous season which has seen us promoted as champions of East Zone Division Two.”
Gorleston were beaten 61-44 by Hingham Rectory, who went on to lose the final 58-56 to King’s Lynn. Earlier King’s Lynn had beaten Scole & District 60-59.
All four teams were congratulated by Hansells Solicitors and Financial Advisers Partner Nick Sutherland who said each team had played their part in a wonderful day’s sport.
“We witnessed 48 players wearing their club shirts with great distinction,” said Sutherland. “It was tense, absorbing and kept spectators riveted right up to the last bowl of the final end.”

Gerald Higgs, David Mylchreest, Robert Marshall, David Sherman 13; John Twitchett, Bob Boggis, Steve Knowles, Barry Knights 5; Colin Harris, David Bailey, Ken Jenkins and Michael Tufts 25. Totals 61-44.
Ludham BC’s final Yarmouth League match saw them win convincing against Repps to take a step closer to promotion.

Pat Benton, Richard Jepson and Eddie Hearn romped home 33-5. Chris Hulse, John Youngs and Dave Mattocks were never troubled either at 29-12. Andy Chaplin, Rodney Wright and Mark Benton led all the way for a comfortable 21-12 and Derek Oakes, Marian Gibbs and Brian Saunders picked it up to win 24-15 (overall 106-44 and seven points).
Potter Heigham were the visitors in the final NWL match. Potter headed three rinks all the way, but there was the unusual situation of one Ludham block effectively securing all of the team points in a 6-6 points draw. Gary Bolton, Marian Gibbs and Richard Locke tore into their opponents from the off going on to win 35-5 (overall 74-59).
