Gorleston Golf Club

After a bye in the first round of the Mail on Sunday Classic, Gorleston’s Ladies faced Weston Park Golf Club in a home tie at the weekend.

The visitors found the home team in top form, with Gorleston eventually prevailing by an impressive margin of 4- to easily progress into round three. Team captain Chris Knappett was full of praise for the players, who all produced their best golf against some tough opponents and they now eagerly await their next match which will be drawn by the Mail on Sunday team on March 5.

Whilst most members were frozen off the golf course by the snowy conditions at home, Gorleston’s Patrick Goffin was enjoying himself in the sun of the Algarve, competing in the final rounds of the HowDidiDo sponsored national singles competition.

Relieved to actually make it to Portugal following a tortuous seven and-a-half hour journey to Manchester Airport to join the rest of the finalists, Patrick proved to be the most successful of the four competitors in the round robin first section of the tournament, but sadly went out at the semi-final knockout stage. Nevertheless, this was a superb overall performance by Patrick putting the club in the national spotlight.

Success which eluded Patrick in Portugal may yet come his way in the Race to Dubai competition where he is due to compete in the National Finals in April, attempting to win a second overseas trip.

Draws have also been made for the Ladies and Men’s Daily Mail Foursomes competitions with the ladies represented by Penny Platten and Val Cadmore facing a trip to Royal Norwich in the first round, while the men’s representatives; Andy Patrick and Hayden Grand also have a tough match, albeit at home, against Marriott Sprowston Manor which is scheduled for tomorrow.

After the recent snow, the Men were relieved to return to competitive action last weekend in the Monthly Stableford, with Richard Reynolds returning to fine form to capture Division One with 39 points. New member Tom Houchin turned in an excellent performance to win Division Two with 36 points, with regular Sunday stalwart Geoff Hall grabbing the victory in Division Three with 37 points.

There is no club competition at the weekend as the annual captains’ drive-in takes place on Sunday at 1pm when a large gathering of members will be there to give the incoming captains their support for the year ahead.
