Christine Knappett repared for her induction as 2012 Ladies’ Captain of Gorleston Golf Club in the best possible way by winning Division One of the Ladies Stableford, scoring 34 points.

Victory in Divisions Two and Three went to Marion Anderson and Victoria Watson both scoring 30 points.

Not to be outdone by the incoming Ladies Captain, Glen Harman the new Club Captain went out the following day and scored an impressive 42 points to secure victory in the Men’s Midweek Stableford. Victor in Division Two was Greg Carter with a superb 43 points.

Having set their competitive bar high, Christine and Glen were duly installed as the 2012 captains at the club’s annual general meeting on Saturday before participating in the traditional Captains’ drive-in the following day, where they were joined by the Senior and Junior Captains Angus Smith and Kyle Brooks.

The drive-in was held in glorious spring sunshine in the presence of an enthusiastic group of members. Three of the quartet managed to discipline themselves and calm their nerves by dispatching straight drives, but unfortunately Glen was not so straight, but nevertheless he will undoubtedly remember the occasion which took place co-incidentally on his 49th birthday for many years to come.

The overall winners on the day were the Club Captain’s nominated charities for 2012, which are the James Paget Hospital Palliative Care East Appeal and the Children’s Ward Endowment Fund also at the James Paget.

During the week prior to the drive-in, members were given the opportunity at guessing the distance the Captains would hit their first tee shots at 1 per go, which raised 137 to be divided equally between the charities.

The club representatives in the Daily Mail National Foursomes Championship Andy Patrick and Hayden Grand made the best possible start to this year’s competition by securing a 3 and 1 victory at Gorleston over their opponents from Sprowston Manor, who conceded home advantage as they failed to arrange the match by the due date.

This weekend the Gorleston Men’s team travel to Mundesley on Saturday for their second round match in the Mail on Sunday Classic in what will be a tough encounter.
