Gorleston bid to give their new year a flying start when they travel to Diss tomorrow for the Norfolk Senior Cup quarter-final which holds the key to silverware success this season.

Although the Greens have beaten Diss 2-1 three times already this term joint-manager Richard Daniels is not taking further progress in the Norfolk County FA’s flagship competition for granted. If a replay is needed it will be on Tuesday at Emerald Park (7.45).

“It’s a one-off – that’s the bottom line. It’s probably better for us that we are away from home because that takes a little bit of pressure off. But if we can get a result against Diss then we are 90 minutes away from a Carrow Road cup final.

Daniels has publicly stated that he believes Gorleston can win the competition this season – despite the presence of big guns Norwich City, King’s Lynn and Wroxham in the last eight. “You have got to have a bit of luck to win cups and against Yarmouth when we won 4-2 after extra time we had luck. When you see Norwich and King’s Lynn drawn together you think that’s in our favour, something has got to give there.

“In a semi-final you raise your game and anything is possible.”

Daniels admitted that disappointing attendances for training sessions in recent weeks had raised questions over the the commitment of some of the players.

And he indicated that he and joint manager Stu Larter were ready to “bite the bullet” in a bid to revitalise the squad.

Last season’s Division One champions made a flying start on their return to the top flight, beating Wroxham and Dereham, but appear to have lost impetus in recent weeks and failed to win in December.

“The commitment for training has not been good and over the last few weeks results have told for us,” said Daniels, whose side failed to win in December.

“We have got a good squad but we have got players who have been there and done it before.

“Let’s see if we can bring players in that haven’t been there before and have got something to prove. Myself and Stu are totally committed. Let’s bite the bullet.”
