Gorleston’s Senior Beaumont team followed their Parks Trophy counterparts into the quarter-finals of this year’s county competition with a clinical display to defeat visitors Brett Vale by nine holes last week. Both teams have now been given difficult away ties, with the Beaumont team drawn against local neighbours Rookery Park, while the Parks team must travel to the South of the County to face Hintlesham Hall.

The Ladies played their fourth and final round robin group match in the Weston Trophy against Bungay, eventually losing by four matches to one and as a consequence, may face relegation for the 2013 tournament.

Having qualified for last weekend’s President’s Mashie County Matchplay tournament, Danny Western was within touching distance of a place in the final, having already beaten two opponents in sudden death play-offs. Unfortunately, it was Danny’s turn to taste defeat in the semi-final as the match again went to sudden death, before Danny was beaten on the 20th hole. The overall victor was Chris Vince from Haverhill, who defeated Danny’s conqueror Chris Bartrum from Diss by 3&1.

Two winning Ladies at Gorleston during the past week have been Tanya McGregor who won the Win Merchant Trophy for the second time by one stroke from Terrie Collingwood with a nett 73, while Heather Harvey was victorious in the Grandma’s Cup, also for the second time after returning 36 points.

Kevin Woods made his years of golfing experience count in the Havard Cup Mixed Medal competition last Saturday in a round that was played in brutally windy conditions. Kevin’s round of three over par 74 was remarkable given the weather, and a nett 69 was just enough to defeat Rosemary Woodhouse on countback after the pair returned the same score.

Last week’s Midweek Stableford involved the largest field of the year so far, as 122 players competed during the day. Winner of Division One with 39 points was Mike Haylett, while Chris Shepherd was victorious in Division Two with 40 points.

The June Sunday Stableford attracted an entry of 97 and thankfully, the high winds of the previous day had abated a little, which was reflected in the scores, as Ian Utting returned a fine 41 points to win Division One, while Jack Flaxman was the victor in the Second Division, also with 41 points and Howard Garner captured the Third Division prize with 39 points.

This weekend, the Men’s Hambro team travel to Rookery Park for an eagerly awaited second round match in this County knockout team competition. Both teams enjoyed home advantage in the first round as Gorleston defeated Newton Green by twelve holes, while Rookery Park had a very close match against Stowmarket, eventually winning by a slender four holes.
