GORLESTON boss Richard Daniels says the name Jimmy Jones will become the inspiration for his team for the rest of the season.

The Greens have a Norfolk Senior Cup final appearance coming up in May and Daniels says his team talk is already in place.

“My team talk will be a picture of Jimmy,” he said. “There isn’t anything that could be more inspirational to us all than that.”

Gorleston have postponed this weekend’s Ridgeons League Premier Division game at home to Newmarket Town following the death on Tuesday night of the club’s honorary president, the man they called Mr Gorleston.

“The first team and reserve games have been postponed – it’s the only thing to do,” said Daniels.

“We hear of the word legend and sometimes that gets used nowadays a bit too freely, but Gorleston Football Club is Jimmy Jones. Without Jimmy we wouldn’t have a club. Yes, there are lot of people who help, not just Jimmy, there are lots of people who do and we are grateful, but thanks to Jimmy that is why we are there. He has held it all together and he was just great man. There comes a time when you can label someone a legend and he thoroughly deserves to be called a legend.”

In May, the Greens head to Carrow Road, a place Jones knew so well from his connections with Norwich City – and Daniels knows what the competition and last year’s promotion from the First Division meant to him.

“What sticks in my mind is the day we beat Norwich City Reserves in the semi-final,” he said.

”He was so upbeat – but it was like we hoped to get to May and he would still be with us.

“And the look on his face when we got promoted last season, that is what I remember. His smile and the hug I got at the end of the game against Saffron Walden will go with me as one of my finest moments. I knew deep down all he wanted was his Gorleston back in the Premier Division and we achieved that and I hope that is something that softens the blow for us all because that is all he wanted. He wanted us back and he got that.

“He was just so passionate about this football club and for that he will never be forgotten here.”
