SKIPPER Grant Holt played a huge part in helping Norwich City extend their lead at the top of League One, then declared: “Now we have to finish the job.”

Holt scored his 26th goal of the season, had a hand in two more - and also missed one glorious chance - as the Canaries beat Yeovil Town 3-0.

City's 14th home victory of the season put them seven points clear of Leeds United with 11 games to go, though the Yorkshire side have one game in hand. If the title chase were the London Marathon, Paul Lambert's men would be a mile ahead at Canary Wharf with a quarter of the race to go - and Holt is not looking over his shoulder.

He said: “The best place to be is at the front. It's up to us. We know what we can do as a squad and a team, if we keep doing it.

“We've got 11 games now, we've had a fantastic run since the manager came in and we've just got to keep the run going and finish the job, nothing else now. If we don't win the league it's a failure in my eyes.

“We said last week it's all about our own performances. If we keep winning games then we will win the league. I said that to the lads before the game. We can only worry about ourselves, we can't worry about everything else that goes on. If we perform in the way we can, we'll win the league and we took a big step towards that today, I think.”

Goals for Hoolahan - his first since Boxing Day - Holt and Chris Martin took the three players' combined total to 60 in all competitions this season.

“I'm glad for Chrissy and Wes to get the goals today,” said Holt. “The last couple of weeks, Wes hasn't chipped in with goals but he's been getting a lot of assists. It was great for him to get that goal today and it's a fantastic total. But it's not just about the three of us, it's about the team that's behind us.”

Hoolahan struck in less than two minutes from a rebound after Holt headed Anthony McNamee's corner against the woodwork.

“It hit the post and it went across the line and Wes managed to tap it in,” said Holt. “We've worked this week on getting people in the area - he did that and that's why you work on those things.

“Today was as dominant as we've been for a while. The way we moved the ball in the first half was fantastic and in the second half we were more dominant than we were in the first, which says a lot about how we played.”

Two goals in six second-half minutes finished off Yeovil, Holt scoring before setting up Chris Martin for the third.

Said Holt: “I think the second goal was crucial. Once we got that it killed their spirits a little bit and gave us the chance to open up a bit more.”

Lambert praised Holt's contribution as he scored for the third time in five games since returning from a three-match ban.

“He was excellent. Sometimes when you have too much of a rest it can be detrimental to you and when Grant doesn't score, people think he's not on top of his game,” he said.

“But his goalscoring exploits have been terrific. And the three of them scoring again today - they've been brilliant.

“But these lads can't do it without the other lads round and about them.”
