Great Yarmouth-Broadland II could not have started better at the weekend before losing 33-5 to local rivals Lowestoft & Yarmouth II.

From the kick-off, Great Yarmouth progressed quickly down the field and a lineout 10m out was taken by Matt Scott. At the back, he headed toward the goal-line, offloading to Asa Morrison who crashed through to score a terrific try.

The home side rallied quickly and strong running from Stuart Brown and Jimmy Dwyer got the ball close. Ben Burch went very close to a score and Great Yarmouth continued to push at the line with Jay Pollard spreading the ball wide.

However, it began to go wrong with a series of penalties pushing the home side back almost 80m. Lowestoft and Yarmouth made the most of the field position by breaking through to score.

The home side’s penalty count was not helping, as Lowestoft capitalised and again moved the ball into scoring range. A second score shortly followed.

Pat Finney was linking well with James Dudley in the lineout and the home side were providing some difficulties for the visitors with some great runs from Darren Gook and Dan Jones. It was again penalties which were damaging Great Yarmouth’s attacking play though.

At half-time Neil Blizzard and Paul Abel joined the field of play. But pressure from Lowestoft paid off as they scored in the corner.

Lowestoft began a run of attacks and Morrison did well to hold up the ball over the line and Stacey Ledgerwood and Matt Scott both put in good tackles. But sustained attacks finally yielded a Lowestoft score.

Matt Moss was making some good ground in midfield and Nathan Cocking did well on a break but lacked support. Brandon Laxton had a couple of strong efforts, but again Great Yarmouth could not turn their opportunities into points and that proved their downfall.

A late counter-attack yielded a final Lowestoft score, despite a couple of great tackles from Nathan Cocking and Paul Abel and the visitors ran out comfortable 33-5 winners.
