Great Yarmouth-Broadland cheered by improved performance

On a warm, sunny afternoon Great Yarmouth-Broadland welcomed Diss seconds to Cobholm looking to improve on the previous week’s performance against champions Fakenham.
Welcoming back several regulars, the hosts were slow out of the blocks, allowing Diss to take an early 7-0 lead after their flanker had crept through a hole at a ruck.
The hosts went straight back down the other end of the field and good runs from the returning Jared Webster and Nathan Bensley as well as ever-present Jimmy Dwyer took them up to the five metre line. They looked set to level when Matt Beckett burrowed over the line, only for the official to adjudge that he was held up.
From the resulting play Diss worked their way down the field and finished the move when their prop forward piled over close to the posts, the conversion making it 14-0.
Broadland once again looked to make amends and a booming punt from Stuart Murray just missed touch. However the pressure applied by a chasing Jamie Murray forced an error and he simply fell on the ball to score the home side’s first points of the contest, with the conversion attempt being missed from a tight angle.
Diss then managed to add two further tries to their tally, taking a 26-5 lead into break.
Whatever coach and captain said at half-time certainly rallied the troops as the home team came out like a different side.

Rampaging No 8 Liam Haylett crashed over from short range after good work from George Wilson and Lee Raven.
Then the home scrum won a penalty and a quick tap from scrum-half Ruddick allowed the supporting Kieran Wilkes to dive over from two yards, Murray adding the conversion to make it 26-17 to the visitors.
Diss added a penalty to their tally before notching up a further seven points when replacement prop Trett was in the sin bin.
However Great Yarmouth-Broadland were not finished and replacement wing Sami Jordan made a strong burst and after several strong pick-and-goes the ball broke left to Stuart Murray who dummied the outside players and dived over for the hosts’ fourth try and bonus point.
It was a much-improved display from the home side and they will head into this weekend’s home fixture against Norwich Union in a resurgent manner.
