Golfers from Great Yarmouth and Caister led the way in impressive fashion as the Norfolk Alliance programme resumed at Royal Norwich.

Alex Holmes took the professional honours with 37 points, one ahead of the vastly experienced duo of Bawburgh’s Andrew Marshall and home player Neil Lythgoe.

Holmes also teamed up with amateur clubmate Josh Brooks to win the team competition with 43 points while two more Great Yarmouth and Caister players - Mervyn King and Barry Wortley - were second on countback with 42.

That’s the same Mervyn King who is better known for his accuracy on the dartboard as part of the PDC’s elite group of players.

Meanwhile a group of enthusiastic golfers teed off for a Ladies’ Friendly Waltz at Great Yarmouth and Caister.

Teams of three played a stableford over 14 holes with Dawn Futter, Sally Barber and Jean Johnson securing first place after scoring 56 points.

Two points behind was the team of Annie Green and Janet Docwra, who were given a blind draw (Sally Barber) and thus scored 54 points.

Just like the Caister lifeboat men, whose motto is “never turn back”, four lady members of Great Yarmouth and Caister completed an 18-hole stableford competition enduring driving snow and sub-zero temperatures while the remaining players quit after 10 holes.

The tenacity of the four women earned three of them a place in the winners’ circle.

First was Liz Robinson with 32 points, second was Linda Croucher (30 points) and third Jean Johnson (29 points).

On a bright and crisp winter’s morning, 34 golfers enjoyed the challenge of the monthly Open Senior pairs’ competition. Playing to 90pc of their handicap, the format was a better ball stableford.

With participants from all over East Anglia — as well as a player from the United States — competition was close.

The winners, Paul Ollington from the home club and his US guest, Kenny Knight, won with 43 points on a countback from two other GY&CGC members, Alan Brooks and Steve Croucher.

In third place, again decided on countback, were home club players Jonathan Soar and Paul Woollaston (42).
