Earlier this month two members of Great Yarmouth Cycling Club, Jenny Anderson and Jan Smith, set off on a 996.5 mile ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

The experience was fully supported by three guides, Each taking turns riding with the group, which consisted of 25 riders.

The weather was good for the majority the ride but the skies opened on the last day so everyone all ended up a little wet. The ride took in steep inclines and fast descents with stunning scenery.

The southern end of the route was sunny and warm and occasionally a little cloudy. Once they headed North past the Lake District and into Scotland the drop in temperature was noticed.

The ride took in landmarks such as the Clifton Suspension Bridge, the Severn Bridge and the Forth Bridge. As the riders headed into Scotland there was an obvious change in the terrain. The hill climbs changed to long drags instead of the short sharp steep climbs that were found down south.

The final day meant an early start was in order with 80 miles to cover, a tough finishing ride, which was made more difficult by the fact it rained all day.

Approximately 10 miles from John O’Groats the weather improved and the group rode in together as a peloton where they were welcomed with applause and a glass of win.

Jenny and Jan were overwhelmed at what they had just achieved. It was a truly amazing experience and they would recommend this ride to any cyclist who is up for a very difficult cycling challenge.

The Great Yarmouth CC Thursday TT saw 18 riders compete. Weather conditions were fair with a light breeze.

Four GYCC riders recorded personal bests. Lewis Bird, riding his second of the year, knocked 15 seconds off his best time with a time of 27 minutes. Anthony Field, also riding his second, showed how good his current form is by taking 10 seconds of his previous time with 25.49.

Jonathan Lincoln edged himself into the 26s, taking eight seconds off with a finish time of 26:59. Jan Smith was the fastest female rider of the night, matching her course best with a time of 28:36. Jonny Hawes was the fastest Great Yarmouth CC rider of the evening, completing in 23:46, taking 19 seconds off in the process. The event was won by Simon Scott in 23:18.
