Great Yarmouth Town bowed out of the Norfolk Senior Cup at the quarter-final stage as underdogs Downham Town recorded a deserved win.

The Bloaters welcomed back Josh Ford after a successful away trip with Norfolk Under-18s and he was joined by fellow youth players Ray Urry, Kieran Hagan and Connor Milligan.

After a lively start an innocuous looking challenge on 25 minutes was punished by a free-kick to the visitors and Bussens stepped up and beat Milligan with a superb strike to give the visitors the lead.

The Bloaters were level six minutes later however. Ford’s throw-in was returned to the full back and he curled in a delightful cross to the far post where Sanders connected with a sweet volley that hit the back of the net.

The visitors regained the lead shortly afterwards when the home defence failed to clear and a Downham striker fired the ball in through a crowd of players.

The visitors continued on the front foot after the break and with the half 16 minutes old, Milligan underhit a pass to Ford and the lively Bussens nipped in to pinch the ball and unselfishly passed across for Oughton to fire in a third for the delighted visitors.

Costandachi joined the action replacing Holmes, and immediately the quality of the home side’s passing began to improve. Ager won a header at a corner and Urry followed up with another header that hit the bar as the home side searched for a way back into the tie.

Downham would have extended their lead but for a well-timed challenge by Howell as the Bloaters piled men forwards. Calvert was then sent off for a second yellow card which seemed to galvanise the visitors.

With five minutes left the Bloaters gave themselves a chance as Urry drove at the visitors. He slipped his pass out to Forbes who drilled in a cross that was met by Sanders to fire in his second of the game to set an exciting finish.

The visitors held out however and were delighted to hear the final whistle to claim a famous and deserved victory. For the Bloaters it was a case of too little, too late as they missed out on a chance of a game at Carrow Road.
