Bungay Black Dog Running Club hosted their annual festival of running at the weekend and with a 10k and a half and a full marathon to choose from it was good to see 14 members of the Great Yarmouth Road Runners team participating across all three events.

It was a beautiful morning for running, with blue skies, unbroken sunshine and a light wind. Of the five runners in the 10k a special mention goes to Lorrain Dawson who picked up a first place award in her age group.

Her daughter, Emma Dawson was first home for the club in 50.56.

Six members of the club took on the challenge of the half marathon. Dean Saunders completed the course in 1:45.30 with his remaining club mates all safely home in just over two hours.

All the runners deserve praise for the efforts, with the full list of finishing times reading: 10k: Emma Dawson 50.56, Lorrain Dawson 51.08, Leigh Taylor 1:02.17, Chuck Weigand 1:07.02 and Anita Betts 1:11.21. Half Marathon: Dean Saunders 1:45.30, Jonathan O’Hara 1:47.23, Ivan Lees 2:02.42, Carole Spong 2:05.22, Anna Coulborn 2:05.30 and Sam O’ Hara 2:13.09.

Three members took on the ultimate challenge of the day by running the full marathon; a gruelling 26.2 miles through the picturesque Suffolk countryside.

Lisa Smith, who is registered blind, was expertly guided around the two-lap course by experienced guide runner Karen Peck.

The pair were joined by club mate Cathy Tooley.

The ladies ran side by side for the duration of the race and finished together in 4:46.47 in what was a great example of team-work.

The race was won by North Norfolk Beach Runners’ Andy Kett who led all the way to win in a time of 2.55.04.

Great Yarmouth Road Runner Simon Bekker took part in the half marathon event held at Lee Valley White Water Centre in Hertfordshire on Sunday, the backdrop for Watersports events at the 2012 London Olympics.

The scenic course encompassed all features of the park and surrounding Nature Reserve on a beautifully sun-drenched day.

Simon’s pre-event training had been hampered due to a knee problem but the decision to rest up for a couple of weeks proved to be a wise one as he made it around to finish strongly in a season’s best time of 01:33.58.
