Diss Otters held their annual open gala at the UEA Sportspark pool on Sunday.

Despite coming quickly after the recent Iceni and Nifty 50s galas, Great Yarmouth Swimming Club still had an impressive 31 swimmers competing against very strong City of Cambridge and West Norfolk teams as well as Thetford Dolphins, Huntingdon Pirates and the hosts.

The GYSC swimmers were up for the challenge and came away with an impressive total of 23 golds, nine silvers and five bronze medals and 80 personal bests.

Many of the swimmers also gained county qualification times, ready for the Norfolk County Championships.

Amelia Dibble (10) added to her ever-increasing medal collection by winning another eight golds and one silver. She competed in every event and to be so consistently strong across all the strokes and distances is especially impressive.

Ryan Webb (16) also continued his excellent form by taking gold in all of the five events he swam. His 56.41 for the 100m free was described by head coach Richard Every as a ‘humdinger’ of a swim. In another close race, Ryan took gold in the 50m free in 25.55s in a close head to head race with a West Norfolk swimmer. In the same heat Jacob Zandbergen (14), racing against older swimmers, was fourth in a new pb of 27.27, which won him gold in his age group. Jacob also took gold in the 100m freestyle and silver in the 100m backstroke.

There was also plenty of gold to be had in the girls 17 and over age group, with Taylor Hudson seeing a return to form, taking three golds and three silvers. She battled it out with team mate Katie Maloney in the same age group, with Katie taking an impressive four golds and a silver. Other medal winners included: Mimi Tyler (9) silver in 50m backstroke, Ruby Rowland (9) bronze in 50m backstroke, Skye Nichols (10) bronze in 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly, Jasmine Coleman (12) gold in 100m butterfly and bronze in 50m butterfly, Anna Pearce (13) silver in 100m butterfly and bronze in 100m breaststroke and Jack Tate (12) silver in 100m butterfly.

There was a great atmosphere on poolside with good cheering on of team mates in their races.
