Great Yarmouth Town remain rooted to the foot of the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division after a Friday night defeat at The Wellesley.

On a miserable cold night with constant heavy rain and high winds the Royals gained revenge for a surprise defeat at Walmer Road back in September as two second half goals saw them take the points.

The Bloaters are still one point behind fellow strugglers Framlingham Town, who lost 2-1 at home to Walsham le Willows on the same evening, with a game in hand.

The Royals had Kaiden Goldspink starting in place of leading goal-scorer Liam Harvey-Cooper who is likely to be out for several weeks with a knee injury and it was good to him at the match although on crutches.

The conditions spoilt the game as a spectacle and after a poor first half with few chances the game remained goalless at the interval.

The second half saw the hosts making the first attacking options but the stout visitors’ defence held out, with their closest chance being a flick onto the top of the bar.

On the hour mark, following pressure from the visitors, Kyle Haylock headed the Royals into the lead.

With the away team now more upbeat Lopez had a good shot saved by home keeper Kingsley Barnes and Haylock hit a post. Then, after the keeper came out, Goldspink saw him out of position and tried a shot from over 40 yards out, with the keeper racing back at pace to gather on his goal-line.

Jack Herbert had a header go wide before, on 75 minutes, the Royals doubled their advantage.

Good build-up play saw Haverson and Russell combined to pass to Goldspink, allowing him to fire in a spectacular shot from some 25 yards past the keeper into the net.

It was an effort from the top drawer and put the Royals in a commanding position, with the hosts unable to get back into the game.

Kirkley had set the record straight after their recent home defeat against the hosts which was their only loss in their last 11 matches.

Bloaters: Barnes, Roots, Savage, Bartram (c), Urry, Forbes, Pascoal, Eagleton, Saunders, Hagan, Palmer. Subs: Perfect, McAra, Cullumbine, Holmes.
