Great Yarmouth Town quickly put their drubbing at Histon behind them by seeing off FC Clacton at The Wellesley on Saturday.

The Bloaters welcomed back Costandachi, Whatmough, Sanders, Bartram and Roots who were all missing from the 5-1 defeat in midweek.

Within seconds of the kick-off some good play on the right fashioned a chance for Andersen but his shot was saved by Avenell.

Coyle then earned a booking for a poor challenge on Andersen which later saw the home skipper replaced.

A minute later a cross into the visitors’ area was half punched clear by Avenell but only to Ben Lewis who looped a header back over the keeper to give the Bloaters the lead on eight minutes. Five minutes later a Coyle free-kick hit the bar to send a warning sign to the home side while Whatmough then made a couple of decent saves to preserve his side’s lead.

Referee David Hutton blew for half-time with the home side comfortable without creating too many chances and the visitors looking threatening at times.

Chris Holmes, who had been pushed up front, almost made an impact after being found by Sanders’ deft touch but his shot from the angle went agonisingly wide with Avenell stranded. Holmes then found space to fire in a shot over the bar and Sanders thought he had scored when through on goal but was called back by an offside flag.

There was a welcome return to action for Lee Roots as he replaced Sanders midway through the half. Davis again fashioned a chance for Hagan but the youngster snatched at this shot and fired over from 10 yards.

The home side were creating chances but there was always a concern that the visitors might grab a late equaliser. However with five minutes left on the clock Hagan was cynically brought down 20 yards from goal, there was an ensuing fracas afterwards and both Roots and Downes were yellow carded for their part in the drama.

Holmes stepped up and hit a powerful free-kick that Avenell got a hand to, but couldn’t prevent hitting the back of the net, and the Bloaters then saw out the game to seal a hard-fought win.

Team: Whatmough, Howell, Ford, Costandachi, Ager, Urry, Sanders, Andersen, Lewis, Hagan, Davis. Subs: Bartram, Roots, Holmes, Wengrzik.
