Runaway Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division leaders Newmarket Town avenged an excellent 2-0 victory by Great Yarmouth in the corresponding fixture at Newmarket by taking all three points in a 0-2 victory.

Bloaters’ birthday boy Sean Perfect showed his pace and skill as he ran from deep inside his own half to create a chance for George but the defence managed to crowd out the striker as he was about shoot.

The Bloaters then had a claim for a penalty as Perfect beat his man and appeared to be upended in the area, but the referee was not in agreement and waved away the claims.

Within four minutes of the restart an innocuous looking cross from the left wing found its way to an unmarked Deakin Napier who fired in a firm drive off the post to give the visitors the lead.

The home side had seen a push but referee and assistant saw nothing and a subsequent conversation led to joint-manager Adam Mason being sent to the stands, apparently for arguing with the officials.

The Bloaters thought they had equalised when Davis found Perfect one-on-one with the keeper and he looped a firm goalbound header over the onrushing goalkeeper Nower, only to see his celebration cut short as Jockeys defender Webster spectacularly cleared off the line and save an almost certain goal.

The Jockeys dealt the killer blow when Whitehead did well on the left and crossed for Napier who made no mistake to score his second goal.

The experienced Newmarket defence used all of their know-how to manage the game out to a conclusion and claimed a valuable three points in their quest for promotion to level four football.

For the home side, the back four of Taylor, Andersen, Howell and Savage for the most part had a good grip of the free-scoring visitors, but a couple of errors led to both goals.

It was a good game to watch but with Thetford winning twice in a week, the Bloaters have now slipped to seventh in the table.

Bloaters: Putnins, Taylor, Savage, Bartram, Howell, Andersen, Perfect, Applegate, J George, Swatman, Davis. Subs: W George, Hunter, Sawyer, Sims, Johnson.

The Reserves, who are top of their league, drew 1-1 with second-placed Mulbarton, their goal by Sam Jones.
