GORLESTON progressed to the next round of the Norfolk Senior Cup, avoiding a banana skin as the Greens in the past have often been defeated by Anglian Combination sides in this competition.

The conditions were difficult owing to the weather and the long grass on the pitch. Gorleston got the ball down and tried to play good football.

They went ahead on 25 minutes when an impressive run by John Bell on the left was finished in style by Lee Hunter, who converted the centre.

Gayton played very well, put in plenty of effort and equalised when, following a throw-in, their centre forward turned quickly and fired into the net, a very well-taken goal.

No further scoring in the first half, but plenty of effort by both sides.

On 60 minutes Gorleston got what proved to be the decisive goal when Gary Ingram fastened on to a long ball over the top of the defence and finished in his usual style. He has now scored 204 in his career for Gorleston.

Gorleston defended well when they had to and Gayton never gave up. Peter Lambert broke clear for Gorleston towards the end of the game and appeared to be fouled, however a corner was given instead of a free-kick.

The Gayton centre half was very impressive and both sides kept trying to play football, but in the end it was the result that mattered and Gorleston are pleased to progress into the next round.

Gorleston: A Nialli, S Taylor, Eddie Thompson, A Thurtle, L Goreham, L Harewood, P Lambert, J Bell, N Thompson, G Ingram, L Hunter. Subs: B Manning, J Long, H Maddison, A Rosatti, R Fruin.

Tomorrow, Gorleston face quite a difficult game away to FC Clacton. Next Tuesday they entertain Diss Town at Emerald Park (kick-off 7.45pm).
