TONIGHT (Friday, kick-off 7.45pm) sees Gorleston try to avoid a Norfolk Senior Cup banana skin when they entertain Anglian Combination North Walsham.

Brantham Athletic 2, Gorleston 3

THE Greens secured a league double over sixth-placed Brantham on Saturday, having defeated them 3-1 at Emerald Park in the first game of the season.

This also meant that Gorleston have won their last five league games, scoring 19 goals and conceding seven in the process, writes Mick Heard.

The team introduced loan signing Adam Ferguson from Norwich United, who is a former Gorleston player. He played in central midfield alongside Steve Taylor while Peter Lambert moved up front alongside Lee Hunter. Harry Maddison was not in the squad as he received an injury last Sunday.

Gorleston went ahead on two minutes when Adam Ferguson took control of the ball and found Peter Lambert with a precise pass. He in return passed to Lee Hunter, who evaded his marker and scored from close range.

Soon after it was 2-0 when defender Leon Harewood headed home from a free-kick.

An unfortunate incident then occurred when a clash of heads between Ricci Butler and Andy French of Brantham resulted in Butler being stretchered off and taken to hospital in Ipswich, while French was seen by paramedics but did not require hospital treatment. Jamie Long came on for Butler.

Gorleston controlled the first half playing excellent football and made the score 3-0 when Brantham keeper Bedingfield saw a shot deflected over him by one of his players as the Greens continued to pressurise the defence.

During the second period Brantham were awarded a penalty when Luke Goreham was alleged to have handled a shot on the line. Many people, including the Brantham supporters thought the ball had hit his chest. Justice perhaps was done when Keiron Lawler saw his fierce shot go wide. Goreham was dismissed.

Hunter broke through from the right and saw his shot stopped by a defender when there was a possible hand ball, but the referee saw otherwise.

Gorleston were obviously on the defensive much more now but with Anis Nialli in good form in goal and well supported by the defence.

They held out until Brantham pulled a goal back when a very good three-men move ended with Ben Spencer powering a header home.

Gorleston defended well in the six minutes of time added on and were very glad to take the points home.

Gorleston: A Nialli, A Thurtle, L Goreham, A Ferguson, L Harewood, E Thompson, J Bell, S Taylor, L Hunter, P Lambert, R Butler. Subs: T Marsden, G Ingram, J Long, A Forbes, R Goodwin.

Christmas draw tickets are now on sale, see any committee member or obtain them at the clubhouse.

The supporters wish Ricci Butler a quick recovery from his injury.
