Saffron Walden 2, Gorleston 1

Gorleston's last seven league games have included six away from home, two of which have been defeats - at Stowmarket and the latest at Saffron Walden on Saturday.

In both these the deciding goal was scored in the 90th minute, which is particularly disappointing, writes

Mick Heard.

At Saffron Walden it was felt that this was the best that the Greens had played over the last few weeks and they had chances to score more goals.

They selected an attacking line-up with Ricci Butler and Regan Harman on the flanks and John Bell partnering Steve Taylor in central midfield. Saffron Walden, the latest team of the month award winners, adopted a route-one style.

Peter Lambert was missing through university studies so Gorleston named the side which drew 1-1 at Downham in midweek when Lee Hunter had notched his 22nd league goal of the season, his 27th in all.

Gorleston started brightly and after 10 minutes Lee Hunter's shot struck a player on the chest and was cleared. However, on 20 minutes Gorleston fell behind when keeper Tom Marsden appeared to be obstructed at a high corner as it was headed in.

Gorleston responded well and Butler squared the ball over from the right but just behind Hunter who could not make contact. Taylor had a shot cleared off the line in another good move.

Gorleston continued to attack in the second period and were rewarded when a fine move saw Hunter back-heel the ball to Butler who fired his ninth goal of the season.

Gorleston's back four of Adam Thurtle, Eddie Thompson, Leon Harewood and Luke Goreham were very solid throughout.

Recent signing Kevin Howes, who adds height to the Gorleston attack, came close with a shot just wide. Harry Maddison came on as a sub and hit the inside of the post.

On 90 minutes Saffron Walden gained a free-kick on the halfway line. The ball came into the area but as keeper Tom Marsden came out Saffron Walden's tall centre-half headed the ball home for the winner.

Gorleston have 10 games left, six at home. They entertain Swaffham at Emerald Park tomorrow, ko 3pm.

There is still much to play for and supporters are asked to come along and get behind the team. There could well be several twists and turns yet before the promotion places are decided.
