Gorleston moved into the second round of the Ridgeons First Division KO Cup with a narrow victory over Diss on Tuesday night, writes David Hardy.

The Greens started well, putting some nice passing moves together, and soon had the visitors on the back foot.

But somewhat against the run of play the Tangerines took the lead after 19 minutes when a speculative cross from the left by Garner evaded everybody in the box and skidded into the goal.

Gorleston responded but were guilty of going too direct too early. Good work from Adam Thurtle on the right set up a shot for John Bell which Diss keeper Webster turned round a post.

The equaliser came five minutes later after Eddie Thompson won the ball in the centre circle, calmly sidestepping an opponent before laying it off to Luke Goreham.

Goreham slid the ball between defenders where Bell had made a perfectly-timed run to coolly lift the ball over the diving keeper.

The Tangerines started the second half the better but it was Gorleston who took the lead.

Bell won the ball in midfield and found Steve Taylor on the right. Taylor's pass was timed to perfection to Mitch Forbes, who knocked it past the keeper into the net.

Despite the reverse Diss were still in the ascendancy and an excellent volley by Sturrock was well held by Elliot Pride.

A Sturrock free-kick was deflected over and Garner then had a shot knocked wide before Hunt hit a thunderous shot which bounced down off the underside of the bar.

Both sides were lucky not to be reduced to 10 men after Adam Ferguson picked up a yellow card for a two-footed tackle, saved by the fact he played the ball first.

Foley then kicked Bell in the shin off the ball, but again the ref was lenient with only a yellow card shown.

Pride saved twice in the final five minutes, once from the head of his own player and once from Hunt, to keep his side ahead. At the other end, Kevin Howes had a header cleared off the line by Bryant.

Team: Elliot Pride, Adam Thurtle, Luke Goreham, Sean Blowers, Adam Ferguson, Eddie Thompson, Aaron Bowers, John Bell, Mitch Forbes, Kevin Howes, Steve Taylor; sub DJ Kareche.
