THE Greens gave a fine display in the first leg of the Chell Trophy at Emerald Park on Saturday against a side top of their league and whose first team is second in the Ridgeons First Division.

Gorleston made an ideal start when a quick break saw Mitch Forbes finish off the move after one minute, writes Mick Heard.

The game was played at a very fast pace with both teams committed to attack. There were near misses at each end before Gorleston went further ahead on 15 minutes when Forbes broke on the right and crossed for Regan Harman to convert.

The Gorleston fans, who are generally very impressed by the standard of football being played in the Reserves games this season, were ecstatic. Then Mitch Forbes finished off a slick move to make the score 3-0 on 19 minutes.

Hadleigh were still well in the game and produced some quality moves, but the Gorleston defence contained experienced players of the calibre of Ben Manning, Nathan Drake and Richard Gillings.

On 37 minutes Gorleston scored their fourth goal when Regan Harman broke through and finished clinically.

The second half was very well fought and Hadleigh made every effort to get back in the game but were thwarted with all the Gorleston team playing their part. Keeper Annis Nialli was in composed form.

Scott Butler went close for Gorleston with a typical free-kick from some distance which clipped the crossbar. Steve Bishop, former first team favourite, was an excellent midfield general for the Greens ably supported by Ben Gillies. Young players such as Ross Goodwin, Sam Jones, Regan Harman and Mitch Forbes are all benefiting from the standard of football.

Another young player, striker Harry Maddison, came off the bench and scored the fifth goal after 81 minutes when he headed over the keeper after receiving a flick-on from Harman. This was obviously a good cushion for the second leg.

Team: A Nialli, R Goodwin, N Drake, R Gillings, B Manning, S Bishop, B Gillies, S Butler, R Harman, M Forbes, S Jones. Subs: R Oldham, A Rosatti, T Tuffrey.

Mitch Forbes was substituted in the second half with an injury.

The Gorleston first team, after having their match put off last Saturday, are away to March, ko 3pm.
