Gorleston’s longest trip of the season proved fruitless as they suffered their third away defeat in a row.

Ricci Butler made three changes from the side that lost 6-0 at Felixstowe with Brodie Adams, Isaac Burrage and Jack Garrod making way for Harley Clements, Damon Wise and Gerson Soares.

The visitors made a decent start but the hosts then began to establish themselves in the game and took the lead in the 24th minute. Taurean Molloy came out to catch a lofted free-kick but he couldn’t hold on to it as he fell under pressure. The grounded keeper then got his hand to a follow-up effort and the ball was cleared but only as far as John Hall and he drilled it back past the stranded keeper.

However, the Godmanchester lead lasted just 10 minutes. Luke Goreham made his way to the edge of the box before sliding the ball wide right to Clements who crossed towards the penalty spot where Jason Thompson was able to take a touch and volley home.

Both sides went forward seeking to gain an advantage before half-time with Goddy coming closest when Reece King was played through but Molloy was quick off his line to save at the attacker’s feet.

The same two players were in action in the first minute of the second period when the Greens’ defence were caught sleeping at a long throw. King looked certain to score but Molloy was able to snuff out the danger.

Next it was Tom Smith who pulled off a cracker of a save at the other end to keep the scores level when Baker got the better of a defender and hit the ball low towards the far post.

Three minutes later a carbon copy move saw Baker through again, this time the shot beat the keeper but went a foot wide of the far post as well.

Rovers took the lead again in the 68th minute. The ball was drilled in low from the left and Molloy could only parry into the middle of the box where King arrived to tuck the ball into the empty net.

This was Gorleston’s 46th match of the season so perhaps they can be forgiven for looking a little leggy at times.
