Gorleston beat Ely in the FA Vase replay on Tuesday night.

The game was 0-0 after 90 minutes so again extra time was needed. This time the Greens were able to strike a winning goal through Adam King and will now host Daventry Utd in the next round.

Gorleston 1, Ely City 1

Saturday’s first FA Vase tie was always likely to be a tough game against a side from the top half of the Premier League, who have just knocked Wroxham out of the FA Cup, but there was no obvious gulf in class in this match.

Gorleston created a good chance in the first minute when Mitch Forbes slid the ball in for Danny Mitchell to run on to but his shot went wide.

Two minutes later Ely’s Lee Dixon stole in unmarked from a free kick but could only head wide. David Smith also headed wide from a corner ten minutes later demonstrating what proved to be Gorleston’s greatest problem throughout the game.

Nice football between Mitchell, Chris Sandford and Matty Taunton almost set up Forbes. It was Forbes again who was denied by a fingertip save as Gorleston broke on a counter attack but the referee missed the touch that everybody else saw and gave a goal kick.

Both sides were evenly matched but the Greens started the second half the stronger. Gary Williams saw his twenty yard drive palmed over and then Forbes almost set Steve Taylor up.

Ely’s best chance of scoring looked to be from corners and set pieces.

Danny Mitchell’s run in on goal was stopped by a dubious offside flag before Taunton beat the offside trap but elected to cut back inside onto his left foot and ran into traffic.

It was from a 61st minute Ely attack that saw Gorleston take the lead.

Elliot Pride saved well with his legs from Andy Pettit, the ball was scrambled away and moved forward quickly to Mitchell who outpaced defenders to latch on to it and slotted the ball past the outrushing keeper, through a defenders legs, and into the goal.

Unfortunately, the lead didn’t last long. Predictably from a long corner, the ball was knocked back into the middle where Dixon nodded it in.

The game was flowing one way then the other. DJ Kareche appeared to be pushed over in the penalty area but the linesman saw nothing before Pride saved well from Adam Dalby. Ely went close with another header but the game moved into extra time.

Arguably Gorleston had the better chances to win in the extra 30 minutes as Ely appeared content with a replay.

Williams had a shot saved before Forbes burst through and squared the ball just behind the onrushing Simeon Randall. Ely were restricted to one long range effort and as the game came to a close Kareche again had a defender climbing all over him in the area and again the linesman ignored it.

Team: Elliot Pride, Sean Blowers, Tom Daniels (Kyle Howell 98), Gary Williams, Adam Thurtle, Eddie Thompson, Chris Sandford, Danny Mitchell (Simeon Randell 90), Mitch Forbes, Steve Taylor, Matty Taunton (DJ Kareche 62)

Stowmarket Reserves 1, Gorleston Reserves 4

With two call offs late on Saturday the Reserves travelled to Stowmarket with a squad of thirteen and came away 4-1 victors.

On a bumpy and firm pitch it was Gorleston who started the stronger as the midfield four denied Stowmarket any time and space on the ball and the hosts were pegged in their own half for the first twenty minutes.

Midway through the half Chris Bond broke the deadlock after their keeper had made two good saves but was unable to do anything from the resulting effort.

Gorleston had a succession of corners but the Stow keeper managed to scramble any goalbound effort away with post and crossbar also coming to the hosts aid.

On thirty five minutes Stowmarket had their one and only chance of the half after a disputed free kick on the edge of the box and a goal was awarded even though the striker was standing in an offside position.

With only a minute to go before half time Simeon Lee was marauding down the left wing in tandem with Elliot Hannant and his chip to the far post was duly dispatched by Adam King to give the Greens a 2-1 half time lead, also resulting in Lee playing no further part due to an injury.

Joel Clements replaced Lee and duly played his part in keeping Stow restricted to one goalbound effort that Whatmough pushed away to his left for a corner that came to nothing.

Damon Bensley then got on the scoresheet on his first start, and with a quarter of the game to go Bond wrapped up the points for the Greens with a strike from fifteen yards giving the keeper no chance.

Team: Jack Whatmough, Shane Risby (Ryan Gowing), Harley Clements, Jack Herbert, Simeon Lee (Joel Clements), Jacob Short, Jonny Watt, Elliot Hannant, Chris Bond, Adam King, Damon Bensley.
