Gorleston finished the season in fourth place, their highest finish since they dropped back into the Ridgeons First Division and the highest they've finished in any division since the 2000-01 campaign.

The 79 points they amassed would have been enough for promotion last season. They had second meanest defence, behind Yarmouth.

A BURST of singing greeted the players as they came out to wish Greens' manager Richard Daniels a happy birthday, writes David Hardy.

In a typical end-of-season affair March had the better of the opening quarter an hour. Elliot Pride had to get down sharply to turn a Lee White header round the post and a long-range effort from James Richardson was then straight into Pride's midriff.

The Greens had to wait until 26th minutes for their first effort on target from an Eddie Thompson header following a Kyle Howell long throw.

Chris Sandford then hit a terrific cross but Aaron Huggins-Bowers couldn't direct his header on target.

A Liam Bartley header repeated the pattern before Regan Harman had an effort blocked when he followed up a Sandford shot. Ashley Brand had a 20-yard

effort go just wide with Pride at full stretch.

The second half began with Harman setting up a good chance for Bartley, but he headed wide before Pride saved with his legs.

Sandford should have opened the scoring in the 56th minute but a defender scrambled the ball clear. Bartley headed a Harman free-kick onto the top of the bar before Sandford cut in from the left and hit a low drive which the keeper saved with his legs.

Sandford had another effort deflected over the bar before Thomas Daniels had a thumping shot blocked.

Escorcio hit another effort over the bar then Bartley, through on the keeper, chose to come back onto this right foot and the chance was gone.

This was only the second goalless draw of the season.

Team Bury 1 Gorleston 2

With fourth place finally secure it would have been easy for the Greens to take it easy in their last away game of the campaign, but this team is better than that and they created several chances, with Steve Taylor and Regan Harman playing well out wide.

Harman forced the keeper into a great save from a free-kick and Eddie Thompson had a header cleared off the line.

Team Bury also played their part, with Adam Thurtle

and Eddie Thompson making superb blocks.

Gary Williams proved to be a valuable change second half as he was involved straight away, causing problems for the Bury defence and, after good build-up play, Bartley finished with a great turn in the box.

Bury equalised from a long throw with keeper Elliot Pride looked to have been impeded. With 20 minutes to go, Gorleston showed the greatest desire to win, scoring with three minutes left.

Howell's long throw caused panic, Sandford hit the bar and Bartley gleefully smashed home the winner, to make it 10 goals in 14 appearances.
