Gorleston 2 Brantham Athletic 5

GORLESTON slumped to a first home defeat of the season at the hands of Brantham Athletic this afternoon.

It was a second heavy league reverse in succession for the Greens following the 4-1 drubbing at Halstead a fortnight ago.

Three second half goals sealed a comfortable win for the visitors after the sides had gone into the interval level at 2-2.

It was not a result that had looked likely when Neil Hurren gave Gorleston a deserved lead after just seven minutes, turning a deflected shot in from close range.

The home side failed to build on their advantage however with Athletic increasingly finding their feet as the game wore on.

The pressure told on 20 minutes when Harry Licence shot in off the post after a David Grimwood header was blocked.

Referee Euan Goodman then turned down a strong penalty appeal to the dismay of the Gorleston bench after Hurren appeared to be bought down by keeper Ryan Bedingfield.

To add insult to injury Athletic took the lead just minutes later with Sean Gunn scoring from a long range shot.

An entertaining opening half ended honours even when Gorleston wide man Stephen Taylor levelled with a superb chip.

Far from providing a platform to build on, The Greens crumbled in the second half completely dominated by the Suffolk side.

Lee Wilcox scored from the edge of the box shortly after the restart before further goals from Oliver Mann and Adam Thompson.

Only a number of good saves from keeper Elliot Pride prevented Gorleston suffering an even heavier defeat.

The result leaves manager Richard Daniel with plenty to think about before the Greens' next Ridgeons League Division One match at Diss a week on Tuesday.
