FC Clacton 3 Gorleston 2

THE Greens travelled to Clacton with revenge in mind after losing their midweek cup tie at home to the Essex club, writes Darren Webb.

It was a hugely frustrating game for Gorleston, who were twice ahead. But the Seasiders levelled both times then gained a controversial penalty which they converted to win the game while Gorleston were denied a late spot-kick.

Assistant manager Alan Smith said: “It was a frustrating game, very disappointing. The general consensus was we were far and away the better team on the day.

“There is still a lot to play for because of all the games postponed - we've got

about 16 games left. We haven't got any of the top teams to play, apart from Brantham. Hopefully we will get back on track,” he said.

Gorleston had an early chance when Sandford volleyed just over.

Gorleston had the better of the play in the opening 20 minutes, but Clacton keeper Gould was rarely troubled. Pride made an excellent save from a Clacton free-kick and also tipped a shot over from the resulting corner.

Lambert chased a deflected ball and was through on goal only for Gould to make a good save at his feet with the rebound falling for Sandford, who shot well wide. Waters saw his shot from a throw-in go just over the bar with Pride beaten.

On the stroke of half-time Lambert chased down a long ball which most believed would go for a corner, playing it back to Hunn who crossed for Sandford to head home.

Clacton equalised after the break, with the Greens unable to clear a Clacton attack and the ball eventually falling for Heighway to poke home despite protests from Gorleston players for hand-ball.

The Greens still looked the stronger side. There was excellent work by Daniels on the left as he chased another lost cause and hurried a defender into making a

mis-timed back pass which Lambert intercepted, rounded the keeper and calmly found the net.

Coyle then seemed to be fouled in the area, but received the yellow card from the referee for arguing his case.

The next tackle was a lunge at Sandford which earned the Clacton player a second yellow and an early bath.

Gorleston again threatened with a Stokeld shot from a Taylor cross just over and a Lambert header going wide. The injured Sandford was replaced by Bell.

The Greens eased off the pace a little and this led to Clacton's best spell.

Pride saved a free-kick which bobbled just in front of him, and again from a corner he saved well. But from another free-kick the Greens struggled to clear and Ribchester scored.

A Reece Hunn cross was almost turned into his own net by a Clacton defender. Worse was to come for Gorleston when, in the 85th minute, Thurtle was adjudged to have fouled Heighway and a penalty awarded. Waters coolly slotted home.

Still there was time for more Gorleston attacks with a flurry of corners and a

free-kick awarded outside the box - although the incident appeared to take place just inside.
