Gorleston 3, Downham Town 1

THE Greens recovered well from the disappointing FA Cup defeat to Fakenham the previous week by claiming three points to keep them near to the top of the division. They have now amassed seven points from three games. The win was well merited with the Gorleston in control of much of the first half when they took a 2-0 lead and seldom looked in trouble, writes Mick Heard.

The team welcomed back Kyle Howell after an injured shoulder and he had an excellent game at right-back. Luke Goreham came in at left-back for Ben Manning, who was on the bench - while Regan Harman came in for his first full game of the season on the left wing.

After establishing a firm hold on the match Gorleston went ahead after 16 minutes when Ricci Butler, who was playing a midfield role, broke through and beat Nathan Nicholls with a well-placed shot.

Gorleston continued to create chances but not until just before the interval did they score the second goal. This resulted from a fine passing movement starting on the left setting up Nathan Thompson on the right. He quickly cut inside, evading his marker, and placed a superb cross low into the area which caused confusion in the Downham defence. With Gorleston forwards closing in, the ball was sliced into the net by a Downham defender.

Downham came into the game more in the second half inspired by their player manager Wayne Anderson. They created chances but were unable to put these away, despite forcing several corners.

Gorleston saw Eddie Thompson and Leon Harewood marshall the defence well and again Steve Taylor was impressive in midfield.

The match became rather niggly at times and there were numerous free-kicks.

Gorleston appeared to have scored a third goal when Nicholls failed to gather a through-ball and Chad Pillar netted, only for the effort to be disallowed for a foul on the keeper.

Fifteen minutes from the end Downham pulled a goal back through Thomas Doy from long-range effort. However, Ricci Butler scored the third goal from a free-kick outside the area. This was his fourth goal of the season.
