Godmanchester Rovers 1, Gorleston 4

Gorleston fans were delighted by this victory against second-placed Godmanchester Rovers on Saturday.

The teams had drawn 1-1 at Gorleston early in the season and it had been a keenly-fought match on that occasion.

The win also meant that Gorleston had won their last three league games, scoring 12 goals in the process and conceding four, writes Mick Heard.

They are currently placed seventh in Ridgeons One and have already played some of the sides above them, quite a good position to be in at this time of the season.

The line-up at Godmanchester saw young player Ross Goodwin come into the team at right-back as regular right-back Kyle Howell is still not quite back to full fitness.

Defender Nathan Drake was unable to travel because of a family commitment. The substitutes' bench of Adam Thurtle, Ben Manning and Matt Bowles was very experienced.

Gorleston started well and took the lead when an excellent cross from Ricci Butler saw Lee Hunter back-head the ball into the net.

The lead was increased when another fine centre from Butler set up defender Leon Harewood to head home.

Gorleston played well but the score remained 2-0 at the break although chances had been created.

Godmanchester responded very well as the second half got under way. They reduced the arrears and applied some pressure for a time.

Gorleston changed their system to 4-5-1 to steady things down. The subs were Adam Thurtle for Goodwin, Bowles for Butler and Manning for Lee Hunter.

Gorleston made sure of the points when a superb ball from John Bell found Luke Goreham on the left and he finished in his usual fine style.

They made it 4-1 when Harry Maddison broke through and slotted the ball home.

Gorleston: A Nialli; R Goodwin, L Harewood, E Thompson, L Goreham, J Bell, S Taylor, P Lambert, R Butler, L Hunter, H Manning. Subs: Thurtle, B Manning, Bowles.

Tomorrow, Gorleston entertain another highly-placed Hadleigh United at Emerald Park (3pm).

The team have also signed midfield player Rob Oldham from neighbours Great Yarmouth and that could well be followed by other signings.
