GORLESTON are now eight league games unbeaten after grinding out a 3-0 home win against Ipswich Wanderers, writes David Hardy.

Tomorrow, the Greens, eighth in the Ridgeons First Division, visit mid-table Godmanchester.

The Greens created the first chance against Wanderers after 15 minutes when a Peter Lambert flick sent Kevin Howes through on goal, but he knocked the ball too far ahead and Wanderers' goalkeeper Gary Hammond was able to smother.

Ipswich had the first effort on target three minutes later from Craig Taker, but Elliot Pride held on well.

Midway through the half Gorleston took the lead when a terrific cross from the left by Steve Taylor was headed in by Howes.

Four minutes later it could have been two when a superb pass by John Bell sent Lambert away. He appeared to be tripped from behind as he entered the box, but stayed on his feet to shoot whilst stumbling, allowing the keeper to save.

Lambert was involved in the second goal after 31 minutes, heading the ball out to Taylor on the left wing, just inside the Wanderers half. Taylor burst forward into the box to tuck the ball past the keeper.

First-half injury time saw a good cross from Adam Thurtle headed goalwards by Lambert but Hammond again saved well. Hammond kept out a Howes header early in the second half and Lambert almost found himself in again, but took one touch too many.

The next goal was going to be crucial. The visitors were having most of the possession but were restricted to a couple of long-range efforts from Leon Parnell and Maurice Pike.

Mitch Forbes came on for the Greens and had an early chance, dragging his shot wide.

An off the ball incident between Eddie Thompson and Tom Deller saw Thompson yellow-carded. Deller escaped punishment but then chased back to tackle, fouled and earned a yellow card.

Five minutes from time the match was settled when a long ball from Tom Daniels towards Forbes led to keeper Gary Hammond getting in a mix-up with defender Ben Hammond. The ball fell nicely for Forbes to shoot into the empty goal.

Two minutes from time Ipswich were awarded a penalty after Thompson and Deller tangled again in the area. Parnell's spot kick sent Pride the wrong way, but went well wide.

A scrappy game at times, but Gorleston showed once again that they have learnt how to battle for a win as they made it eight league games unbeaten and four wins on the bounce in all competitions.

Greens' manager Richard Daniels said: “Our final ball was average, not slick enough at times. We missed so many chances it could have been six or seven, but a win is a win - plus we defended well, more as a unit.”
