A field of 22 riders turned out to take part in Great Yarmouth Cycling Club’s weekly 10, despite the forecast.

The evening’s weather, however, was not as bad as expected and a good number of riders achieved their best times of the season, including eight of the 11 GYCC riders who took part.

Paul Hastings completed in 33.39 (17.8mph), taking one minute 15 seconds off his best this season and was one second shy of beating his best time from last season. Ron Bean took 14 seconds off, finishing in 32.37 (18.4mph). Catherine Lee managed to take 82 seconds off this season’s best, clocking a time of 29.03 (20.7mph).

Kerstan Langer was the fastest female of the night in 27.34 (21.8mph), taking one minute 34 seconds off. Simon Tate shaved three seconds off with a time of 27.57 (21.5mph). Both Brian Carr and Bryan Averre crossed the line in 27.39 (21.7mph), with Carr knocking 67 seconds off his best. Jonny Hawes was the fastest of the GYCC riders 24.07 (24.9mph), taking four seconds off his best this season. The event was won by Liam Gentry in 22.16 (26.9mph).

Saturday saw Norwich ABC hold their 10-mile Time Trial on the popular B10/43 over at Wortwell. Two GYCC riders travelled down to take part. Brian Carr finished in 25.38, setting a personal best. Tom Moore completed in 24.12, agonisingly just one second off his personal best. The event was won by Matthew Senter (Team VeloVelocity) in 20.26.

GYCC were represented at Fire Ride on Sunday. The day started cold and windy but ended up sunny, warm and still windy. Two of the ladies team completed the 35-mile route. One rider from the Lowestoft area did the 65-mile ride and seven members of the club rode to Beccles, completed 35 miles and then rode home.

It was a well organised event and an interesting route and is certainly worth supporting again next year.

GYCC is holding a fund-raising sponsored bike ride for the Louise Hamilton Palliative Care Centre on July 23. All proceeds go directly to the Louise Hamilton Centre. The event starts and ends at Haddiscoe Village Hall and there are three routes to choose from, 10, 25 and 50 miles, which means a choice for all ages and abilities. All age groups can attend on any form of bike. This is the third year running the event and the club would like to increase on its previous totals of around £1,500.
