With the season proper nearly upon us, Gorleston Golf Club member Marion Anderson was able to celebrate an early trophy success with victory in the King George Cup.

Played in conjunction with the March Medal, the competition is always well supported and 27 ladies tried their best to add their name to the cup.

But it was Marion, already a two-time champion in 2009 and 2010, who made it a hat-trick with an excellent nett 70 to beat Anne Amos by a single shot.

Anne and Marion took the honours in Divisions One and Two respectively, while Marieta Holmes ran away with the Third Division following a fine nett 70.

The 16th and final week of the Winter Midweek Stableford saw 95 players taking part. Ray Pope, Steven Hall and Kevin Carter filled the first three places in Division One;, each returning 39 points, while Kevin Shaw ran out a comfortable winner of Division Two following an exceptional 44 points, four ahead of Keith Newberry in second.

Steven Hall, the long-time leader in the Aggregate Foolhardy Trophy aggregate competition, improved his score by four points – and it was just as well as he won by just two in the end to record a hat-trick of victories after Kevin Shaw made up 14 points in the final round.

The first Mixed Friendly match of the season saw the visit of the Rookery Park team last Saturday. Fun and companionship is what the friendly matches are all about, but the Gorleston team were in fine form, recording a victory by six games to one.

The April Men’s Medal saw 71 players take to the course and it was five handicapper Ben Leuty recording a fine round of 73 nett 68 who beat new course manager Danny Perring by one stroke after Danny had recorded a level par round of 71 (nett 69).

Division Two saw another nett 68, this time from Jack Keyzor, winning by one stroke from junior member Alex Barnham. Howard Thornton returned a best of the day nett 67 to ease to a two strokes victory over Barrie Peake and Peter Tindsley in the Third Division.

The April Medal marks the end of the year-long battle for the Medal Bowl. Leading since the autumn, Ray Pope marked the end of a fine season by improving by three strokes to end on 349 from his best five rounds to beat Mark Everard and Colin Beare into joint second place, three behind.
