Great Yarmouth first team are celebrating an outstanding team performance, having finished fifth in the East League Division 2NE.
The league was very closely fought, with Yarmouth competing with the top teams of Norwich City, Norwich Dragons, Ipswich III, Harleston III and Dereham II. All teams finished on almost identical points, with Norwich City taking top spot. The Yarmouth squad consisting of mainly 13 players, produced undoubtedly some of the best hockey the club has played since joining the East League four seasons ago. With the acquisition of two new experienced players, Jen Burrage and Alexis Williamson, this strengthened the already skilful squad enabling them to play much more controlled and attacking hockey which produced 56 goals with only 24 conceded.
Young players feature strongly with Ellice Thompson, Abi Creak and Jes Woodrow - first year sixth form students - being key members of the squad. The Yarmouth defence of Jodie Hargrave (goalkeeper) Vicky Long, Michelle Howe and Helen Walsh controlled by Clare Patterson performed well all season, allowing Yarmouth's midfield and the skill of Anna Creak and Alexis Williamson to move the ball quickly to the forwards governed by Hannah Gibbs.
Coach Bernard Williamson (assisted by Alexis Williamson) is extremely pleased with the hard work of all the Yarmouth players and the dedication to improve their game. He said: “The change in formation and hard work at training allowed the team to push the button and pressurise teams from the moment the games begun.”
Rae Aldous, captain, would like to thank all team members for an excellent team effort and also Peter Woodrow for umpiring the majority of the games.
