It was another successful year for athletes from Great Yarmouth and District AC at the county championships of Norfolk and Suffolk, with a haul of 10 golds, 14 silvers and nine bronzes as well as trophies.

There were some outstanding performances and personal bests in the events in Norwich and Ipswich.

The club’s new county champions for 2017 are Lauren Ward (U13g) for 200m in 30.1 and long jump with 4.27m, Molly Bean (U17w) for high jump in 1.50m, Hannah Mayne, Suffolk (U17w) in long jump (5m), Alfie Leonard (U17m) for 400m in 52.0. Kai Beadle (U17m) for high jump (1.75m), Amy Dowsett (U20w) for high jump in 1.45m, Nicole Mukuya (SW) in the mile (5.22) and Sophie McKinna, who set a new championship record in SP4K with a throw of 16.62m.

In the Quad Kids Under 11s Championships. Jennifer Allen won the girls’ title with 194 points. Allyna Mukuya was a close second with 191 points and Oliver Shipp was runner-up in the boys with 214 points.

Ricky Brown shared in the success and medalled in the Special Olympics Norfolk competition which was held for the first time alongside the Norfolk Championships.

Meanwhile Norwich Road Runners hosted the first of this year’s three races in the popular Wroxham 5k series.

There were 593 finishers, 14 of whom were members of Great Yarmouth Road Runners.

Having the race of his life, Sean Jermy finished in 10th place overall. His outstanding time of 16.43 was not only a personal best but it also equalled the GYRR record for the senior men.

Marc Evans, Andy Clark and Gary Pillar also had strong runs, finishing under the 20 minute mark.

Finishing in less than 21 minutes were Matt Buckoke, Mark Stone and Penny Studley. Penny picked up a shield for coming third in the 40-44 age category.

Congratulations are due to all the runners who hope to be joined by even more teammates at the next race in the series on June 14.
